Silica Warning

Safe Usage Guide — Preventing Health Hazards from Silica Dust

Our stone surfaces are completely safe to transport, ship, and use in finished form — no special precautions are needed once a product is installed.

The risk arises during fabrication: cutting, grinding, drilling, polishing, sanding, or dismantling these surfaces releases respirable crystalline silica (RCS), a fine dust that can seriously harm anyone who breathes it in without protection. Fabricators, installers, and anyone working near these processes must follow the safety measures below.

What Is Silica?

Crystalline silica (silicon dioxide) is a natural mineral found in quartz, granite, sandstone, and sand, and it's also used in many manufactured materials like glass, tile, brick, and countertops.

Silica content by stone type (average %):

Stone Silica %
Engineered stone / Quartz ≥93
Quartzite 95
Sandstone 60
Granite 10–45
Marble 5–30
Slate / Soapstone Varies

California Prop 65 Notice: This product contains silica and titanium dioxide — substances California classifies as carcinogens and reproductive toxins when airborne. See www.p65warnings.ca.gov.

Exposure limits: Regulatory bodies set legal thresholds for RCS exposure (Permissible Exposure Limits and Action Levels), and organizations like ACGIH® publish recommended limits. In the U.S., OSHA's PEL is 0.05 mg/m³ with an Action Level of 0.025 mg/m³. Employers should monitor workplace air and consult occupational health professionals to stay within these limits.

Reducing Silica Exposure

Use wet methods whenever possible. Water-integrated saws, grinders, and polishers dramatically cut down airborne dust. Note that this creates silica-laden water mist, so respiratory protection is still often required.

Favor CNC equipment. Waterjet cutters and automated saws are safer than manual tools — use safety enclosures and keep operators at a distance.

When manual tools are necessary: use water-fed attachments, guards to contain mist, correctly balanced water pressure, and a half-face respirator.

Ventilation

  • Maintain general workspace airflow (aim for 6+ air exchanges per hour), venting safely away from doors and windows.
  • Install local exhaust ventilation at each workstation to capture dust at the source.
  • Pair any dry manual tool with a dedicated HEPA dust-collection attachment.
  • Don't use standing fans — they spread settled dust rather than removing it.
  • Keep dust-generating work physically separated from other workers using barriers or distance.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Employers must supply and enforce PPE use in all fabrication and installation areas, restrict hazardous zones to equipped personnel, and train workers on proper fit, use, and maintenance. Keep records of equipment and training.

Required gear includes:

  • Hair covering and safety helmet
  • Steel-capped, nonslip safety shoes (rubber boots in wet areas)
  • Safety glasses/goggles
  • Hearing protection in loud areas
  • Gloves
  • Aprons in wet zones

Respiratory Protection (RPE)

RPE is essential but doesn't replace engineering controls like wet-cutting and ventilation — those should still be used to keep dust levels as low as possible.

Half-face respirator: for wet manual fabrication or working near dust-generating activity. Disposable mask: for lower-risk areas, like washdown zones or near well-ventilated CNC machines. PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator): for unknown or high exposure levels, or for workers with facial hair (which prevents a proper seal on other masks).

Filters: use P3, N95, or higher-rated filters (N99/N100 for greater protection); replace half-face respirator filters roughly every 6 months. Disposable masks marked "NR" are single-shift only.

Workers should be medically evaluated and fit-tested before using RPE, and equipment should be stored per manufacturer instructions.

Cleaning & Dust Disposal

Clean daily using wet methods (low-pressure hosing, wet sweeping) or HEPA vacuums — never dry sweeping or compressed air. Dispose of silica sludge in sealed containers per local waste regulations.

General Workplace Safety

  • Keep the work area clean and well organized
  • Ensure good ventilation and lighting
  • Restrict access to authorized workers only
  • Keep a stocked first-aid kit on site
  • Read and follow all tool manufacturer instructions
  • Use and maintain tools only as intended
